The French translation of the Qur'an by André Chouraqui, fruit of his vision for dialogue between the three monotheisms.

Surah 1 — THE OPENER — AL-FÂTIHAT

Al-Fâtihat, the Opener, the Head of the Qur'an, gives the key that opens all the doors of Islam. This inaugural psalm of the Qur'anic revelation is the only one that must be recited by heart at the beginning of every prayer. It provides a perfect synthesis of the Qur'an's teachings, just as the first Psalm summarized those of the Bible.

In the name of Allah,
the Matriciant, the Matriciel.
The yearning of Allah, Rabb of the universes,

the Matriciant, the Matriciel,

sovereign on the day of Reckoning:

You, we serve,
You, we beseech.

Guide us on the ascending path,

the path of those whom you delight,
not that of those under wrath
nor of those gone astray.
